Safe Speak Counselling
At Howitt Primary Community School we recognise that children’s mental well-being is just as important as their physical health.
Safe Speak Counselling provides the children with an opportunity to talk in confidence to a trained Relate counsellor about any worries or concerns they have. These may include:
- Coping with change
- Being worried or upset about something
What happens in a session?
Children will talk about the things that are important to them, they will also take part in creative activities to help them feel comfortable and at ease if needed.
How long are the sessions?
Sessions occur every week and last between 30-45 minutes and usually run for 6-8 weeks but are reviewed and if needed can last longer. Sessions take place in our Rainbow Room and to help develop trust between the counsellor and the child the sessions will remain private.
How can I refer my child?
As a parent if you are worried about your child and feel they may benefit from speaking to a counsellor speak to our SENCo Mrs Ellinor Edgeley on 01773 713217 who will chat to you about what is involved and give you the appropriate paperwork to complete to refer your child.
Once the paperwork has been returned the Safe Speak counsellor will contact you via telephone to discuss your referral and let you know when a place is available to start sessions.
Sometimes a teacher may feel a child in their class would benefit from counselling and in this case the teacher will contact the parent and discuss the options available, such as positive support or counselling and only with parent consent will this happen.
