Years 3, 4 and 5 Greenaway Shadowing Group
Some of our reading enthusiasts from Years 3, 4 and 5 have been working with Cathy Petersen from the Derbyshire Library Service shadowing the annual Greenaway Awards. Children from schools all over the country have been meeting to share their thoughts and opinions about the eight books which were shortlisted for this year’s Greenaway Prize. The prize is named after the author and illustrator Kate Greenaway and is given for the best illustrated book for children.
Cathy and I were amazed at the quality of discussion in the group. The children were very critical and had very strong ideas about which book should win the prize! Although their opinions did not influence the actual outcome of the vote (the winner is chosen by a selected jury) they were very excited to find out if their choice matched that of the judges.
Year 3 and 4 children chose Wild Animals of the North as their top pick and Year 5 children chose The Journey. The actual winner was Tribe of Kids. Year 5 readers were delighted to discover that The Journey won the Amnesty International prize for its very moving depiction of what it was like to be a refugee fleeing war.
Big thanks to Cathy for providing our children with an amazing reading experience. They’ve definitely learned not to judge a book by its cover!
