Romans on the Rampage
WOW! We have had a very busy half term with lots of learning taking place.
Even though our main topic for Spring 2 and Summer 1 is all about the Romans, the children started Spring 2 off with a slightly different theme. We were very lucky to have a theatre company come in and perform 'Treasure Island'. We have written some fantastic pirate wanted posters which are now on a whole school display.
To kick start our Roman topic we invited our very own Romans into school for our WOW day. Julius and Marcus taught us lots about what Roman warriors wore, why they invaded Britain, how they fought in battle, what made them so successful in battle, what weapons they used, what happened in the colosseums and we even learnt how they went to the toilet.
In English, we have been reading 'Escape from Pompeii'. It is a fantastic book about two young children who manage to escape from Pompeii as Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city in AD79. We have based our writing around this story and have written some great diary entries from the perspectives of Tranio and Livia.
In Summer 1, we have continued to learn about the Romans in both our topic and English lessons.
We received a letter from a Antonius of Rome who invited us to join his Roman army. Before we decided if we wanted to join his army or not, we learnt lots about Roman armies and the duties of a Roman solider. We then wrote our letters of response back to the Roman. We hope he enjoys reading the 55 letters that we have sent back to him!
In our English lessons, we have been learning about myths and legends. We read the myth of ‘Romulus and Remus’ and discovered how Rome was created.
We have also learnt about the different Gods and Goddesses that the Romans believed in.
Overall, we have had lots of fun and have learnt lots of things over the past two half terms about the Romans!
